“Every artist will tell you of the artworks that they want to hang onto; pieces that mean something to them, which they are reluctant to part with. I am no exception, or rather, should I say, Eileen and I, are no exception. Our dining-room walls are covered in paintings that represent collections that have come off my easel over the years and we politely let interested collectors know that these are ‘Eileen’s private collection’.” "A number of these ‘reserved’ pieces are also

Over Thirty Years in the Making #1 – Childhood Memories brought to life It all started in 1995, or did it? Did it, in fact, start way back when I was a child playing in my Grandmother’s garden? Where I experienced a magical event that stayed with me throughout my life – as childhood memories often do – particularly powerful ones. A visual memory, waiting to be captured with my paints and brushes, as portrayed in my short story, ‘Starway Sapphires’. But … back to 1995, when a

Over Thirty Years in the Making #1 – Childhood Memories brought to life The first Elphen character came to life through my watercolour paints and brushes and as I worked, the story developed along with it. Lacewing, a Swarm Leader, was soon joined by Artimus Glin, an itinerant artist; then Starfire, the Elphen Seer and on it went, until a complete story was written and visualised through a collection of eighteen, full-plate watercolour paintings. The story ran across sevent

Over Thirty Years in the Making #1 – Childhood Memories brought to life All-in-all, 1997 turned out to be a momentous year, for no sooner had we invested our time and energy into The Elphen Chronicles, than the licence for our art magazine was taken up by a publisher and it was all go. Eileen as the magazine Editor, writing and commissioning articles, with my role being the Technical Editor and principal author/illustrator of the tutorials on traditional painting and drawing

Please play me by clicking on the image We bring you New Year Greetings from our studio in the Highlands of Scotland where, in common with many across the Northern Hemisphere, we look out over our snow-draped garden. Although we are some two weeks past mid-winter and the afternoons are getting lighter, we nevertheless start to feel a hot-chocolate or milky-coffee is in order once the light starts to fade around three-thirty in the afternoon – which is when I take a break from

This comes with warmest wishes from our studio in the Highlands of Scotland, at a magical time of the year; when the palette of vibrant Autumnal colours is at its most vivid. The past week or so has seen the temperatures here sink to below minus, from an unusually warm start to November, then swinging back up again with frosty mornings and clearer skies. Rainbows have made daily appearances across both land and sea, sometimes doubling-up. As for the low-lying light, as ever i

We have always believed in the power of creativity, not only for the creator, but, just as importantly, have also witnessed first-hand the positive reactions in anyone viewing the results of someone’s creative efforts. Like us, you will no doubt have heard many and varied reactions – most common amongst them being “I cannot draw a straight line”, or “I haven’t got a creative bone in my body”. If either of those reactions was true, then none of us would be creating our artwor

Eileen and I do so appreciate just how truly fortunate we are to live in a part of the world that attracts visitors from across the globe and to have free and easy access to our surroundings throughout the year. Some people are of the opinion that the Highlands of Scotland are wet and dreary, bugged by midgies – but this couldn’t be further from the truth. Here, there are vast skies looking down on multitude vistas of mixed landscape. There are mountains and glens, gorges and
