THE MUSICAL JOURNEY of ‘Webstrand, the Tooth Gatherer’
“When Paul first approached me about creating an Elphen Song, for his story of ‘Webstrand the Tooth Gatherer’ - I immediately jumped at the chance. Reading through the manuscript and seeing Paul’s superb Masterworks paintings and vignettes, I at once felt the many layers of mood and atmosphere, lent themselves readily to musical interpretation.
I found the life-changing journey in the book immensely inspiring and was soon composing music for all nine chapters! From the iridescent shimmer of Elphen wings in the moonlight and Fizz’s comical attempts to get dressed, through the Starway and Crystal Caverns to the wonders of Shimmistra (populated by both magical Elphen and dreaded Shades), to the safety and serenity of home, all suggested to me soundscapes and tunes which, through a process of development, have found their way onto the upcoming album.
The opportunity to collaborate on Elphen Chronicles has been a magical journey of discovery, to a place where, as Paul so rightly says, ‘Imagination is more precious than diamonds.’”

A professional musician versed in many styles, including classical, traditional, folk, to name but a few; Liza Mulholland’s career spans many decades, involving a breadth of projects. Hailing from a Scottish islands family, now based in the Highlands of Scotland, Liza’s creative soul is rooted in the form of music that has influenced many genres of traditional folk music throughout the world. A culture that inspires collaboration; where songs and music are passed down from one generation to another, through music first heard in the cradle, performed in family gatherings and at communal sessions.
Her own love of collaboration is reflected in a career that has not only featured performances in recordings and live concerts, but also included devising and producing TV, radio and stage productions, making award-winning arts documentaries for BBC Scotland. Solo works, include Liza’s album of songs and tunes on her debut album ‘Fine’n’Rosy’ and the first book in her ‘Inside Folk’ series.
