Signed by Paul, this certificate carries a unique Studio Cat No. which is allocated to each individual collector and features Paul’s declaration that the boxed-hardback was purchased directly from his private studio.
Open the cover of this Artist’s Studio First Edition to discover an ‘added extra’, which is available to order and will make this edition of Starway Sapphires even more collectable – further proof that this hardback was purchased directly from Paul’s private studio. A hand-painted, watercolour on deckle-edged watercolour paper, of one of the magical Starway Sapphire blue-butterflies, which is only available from Paul’s studio - painted by Paul himself and attached to the reverse of the front cover.
Turn the page to reveal the Paul Taggart’s Elphen Chronicles spread, featuring Weftwing holding a dandelion-head – below which you will discover the personalisation panel in which your name, or the name of the recipient, will be entered, along with the Studio No. matching the Studio Cat No. on the Certificate of Authenticity.

Now your discoveries and adventures with Zand can begin – significant happenings that follow-through and unfold in subsequent stories related in The Paintbox Tales, all lovingly depicted in Paul’s Miniature Masterworks oil paintings – all inspired by his own childhood experience in his Grandmother’s garden and his passion for storytelling through his paintings.
You will be transported from the ‘sun-filled’ summer days of Zand’s childhood, his enchanting encounter with the Starway Sapphires and subsequent meeting with Weftwing, the Elphen Swarm Leader and Insect Whisperer. Finally, as Zand discovers his grandfather, Artimus Glin’s, legacy paintbox, so too will you discover the potential magic in a box of paints, brushes, jars of mediums and a palette – everything needed for the art of visual storytelling.
Paul uses traditional techniques for the miniature oil paintings that illustrate his Paintbox Tales and, as with my designs for ‘Webstrand, the Tooth Gatherer’, this provided the starting point. Their size and square shape put me in mind of treasured icons, which inspired the format of this book.
‘Starway Sapphires’ required the most careful consideration. When designing the first book in any series, I not only need to make the pages engaging for the reader; I also have to take into account what, of this first, will be reflected in the rest.

Fragments of gold-leaf ‘appear’ to have been scattered across the pages - I wanted to give the impression that if you stroke the pages, gold-sparkled paint will come away on your fingers. Study the pages carefully and you will discover Elphen wings, flowing throughout the book, embedded as a watermark motif – a magical background for Paul’s chronicle of this precious Elphen tale, ‘Starway Sapphires’.”
